Abeokuta

Overlooking_Abeokuta

his smile is careless,
teeth scattered like bullets from
a firing squad
he trots in an off-white underwear
and goes to sleep under where
his mother sleeps;
underneath a bench beneath the bridge

but he smiles, teeth mud brown like
Ibadan. He runs haphazardly like Lagos.
a slave to despair like Badagry, with
hope in the distance like Kano

he scampers in his underwear to
under where his mother sleeps
underneath a bench
beneath the bridge
under a rock; l'abe okuta,
Abeokuta

  1. Love the play on words “scattered” all over this especially:

“teeth scattered like bullets from a firing squad”

    “Mud brown like Ibadan”

    “Underwear … Under where”

    And finally, “l’abe okuta” 🙂
